Men’s Style Tips: The Art of Casual, by Gareth Scourfield

When it comes to the weekend, or even a dress down Friday at work, you should enjoy the chance to wear a more relaxed, comfortable style. But smart/casual can be a tough one to get right. Unlike picking a suit or office-wear – where your options are pretty limited – this slightly vague term means there are many more choices for you.

To advise us on this tricky dress code, we asked Daniel Craig’s stylist Gareth Scourfield for his tips on what wardrobe staples you need for this look.

A plain white t-shirt is absolutely essential for your smart/casual needs.  A clean sharp look, first made stylish by actor Paul Newman.

Gareth suggests: “Don’t overcomplicate it. A simple V-neck or round neck white tee, combined with well-fitting denim jeans or chinos is a simple classic!”

The great thing about this simple t-shirt is the versatility.  You can combine with a range of trousers colours. Here we’ve matched a white tee with a pair of blue denim jeans and a sharp pair of trainers, and complete your Paul Newman look with a pair of our Navy & White floral socks.

Denim is the go-to when it comes to a casual dress code. Denim jeans are easily paired with a plain tee or for a smarter casual look, wear with a shirt.

“Picking the right denim is all about getting the right fit. It’s so important,” says Gareth. “Slim jeans are flattering and the ideal choice.  Avoid either ultra-skinny or slouchy, baggy designs. When it comes to the material, go for good quality denim.  Selvedge style denim always looks good when rolled up, which is a great tip to show off a bit of sock style. A final tip? When you do find a pair of jeans that look & feel good, buy several pairs!

If you don’t already own some, a pair of well-fitting, comfortable chinos is a great style choice to achieve the smart/casual look. As they come in even more variety of colours and fits, this style of trouser is a good alternative to denim.

Classically casual, try a pair of slim-fitting brown chinos with leather shoes. And as the perfect finishing touch, add a splash of detail with our Ottaway Mustard socks.

Wearing trainers on a day-to-day basis is an established trend among men of all ages. With the right pair, trainers can be a great asset to a casual look. “Despite what some more traditional people might say, trainers do have their place outside of the gym.  I would always recommend you try something understated, keeping them a simple colour and design,” advises Gareth.

We love this combination of a grey trainer with our Bloomsbury Blue socks.
